In 2016 and 2017, I took Jazz composition lessons with the extraordinaire trombonist and professor Jim Pugh at the University of Illinois. It was a beautiful learning process to communicate my ideas and expand my compositions' harmonic and melodic paths. For one year, I composed every week, usually at night, in the silence of my room. I enjoyed the geometric concept of the techniques I was studying. Also, the nocturnal silence was an element that would foster my creativity during the chaotic years of my doctoral studies.
Two years later, five amazing musicians joined me, and we started the album production. The studio sessions were fast (total of 6 hours) and quite a challenge for us in the recording room. We were very close to each other, to the point we could hear one another’s heartbeats.
It was a fantastic experience and a great moment of music communion. We were different worlds united by the same beat, stating musical opinions, improvising, and creating a unique dialogue with sounds.
I hope you enjoy Nocturnal Geometries.
